20 Minutes of Sewing

Here I go again...

I wasn't going to sign up for anything else (I think I said this exact same phrase in a different post within the last week), but Beth @ Quilting Hottie Haven is hosting a Drop and Give Me Twenty, as a way to encourage all of us to make a commitment to sew at least 20 minutes every single day for the month of February, and try to finish some of these unfinished projects we have stuffed away.

Since I have a few things to finish....and a few things to start, I hereby declare that I intend to spend at least 20 minutes sewing, cutting, ironing, binding, etc. every day in February.  I hope that most of this time is spent sewing, but I'll be without my sewing machine for a few days while it's out having a much needed tune-up.

If you'd like to join in, check it out! Lots of great prizes!

FNSI Fail

I really did attempt a project during my Friday Night Sew-In, but I really don't have much to show. I had already cut a lot of strips with my Accuquilt Go 2-1/2 inch strip die. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I cut those strips into 16" strips to sew together for my Scrappy Trip Around the World blocks.

I was trying to be as scrappy as possible so jumbled them all together and started grabbing one at a time to sew 6 strips together.
As you can see, I have a lot of different fabrics in this pile. They just don't match....at all. This is a tough project!!
These are the four blocks that I finished....and the ones I'll be ripping apart.
And this is the one that I finished recently. Just not feelin' it. I'll keep it because it's already sewn together, but I can't imagine I'll ever do anything with it.

And the lucky winner is.....

It's time to announce the winner of my giveaway to celebrate one year of blogging!

The results of the Violet Cottage random number generator:

The randomly picked number is: 9

Giveaway Reminder -- FNSI -- Quilt Guild

Just a quick reminder that tonight's the night to give away some fabric!! If you haven't already entered, you still have a little bit of time!

My Friday Night Sew In was not very productive. I was trying to get another bunch of my scrappy trip around the world strips done, but I've decided that I just can't do random scrappy. I thought I could overcome it and challenge myself, but I can't. OK, maybe I can, but I don't want to. I saw one recently that I really liked on My Quilt Diet.  I think just adding that one consistent color in each block would be easier for me to handle. Maybe I'll undo everything I did last night and start over.

I went to my first Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild Sew Day. What a great group! I had such a good time just hanging out with these women and talking about sewing and quilting. I got some great tips and, of course, encouragement to attempt free motion quilting, which I've been a little afraid of. Heck, I just might take a class!

I'm heading out for a bit. Stay tuned for the winner and some FNSI pics.  I think there are only about 36 entries!

Celebrated Local Quilt Shop Day

Of course, I did my part in celebrating Local Quilt Shop Day! On my way home from work, I stopped in real quick to make my purchase.....because it just had to be done. I love supporting my local quilt shop!! I stopped in at Quiltwork Patches and picked up some fabric that I'll use for the Relay For Life quilt that I'll be starting soon. I'm using the What Cancer Cannot Do fabric panels that I posted about recently. Today, I bought some Prospect Park by Kitty Yoshida for Benartex in purple/lavender, which I think will be perfect because I wanted to be able to represent ALL cancers. This fabric is BEAUTIFUL!

And while I'm not giving this fabric away, I AM giving away some other fabric. Check out my Anniversary Giveaway.

If you're not doing anything fun tomorrow night, and are just hanging out at home sewing, link up with Handmade by Heidi for her Friday Night Sew In.

Oh, and I also decided to link up with Karen at Sew Many Ways for her Find a Friend Friday. There's nothing required....no projects to sew, cookies to bake, etc. Just link up your blog to meet other bloggers or just make new friends.

Later,

What is a Quilt Jam?

What in the world is a Quilt Jam anyway???

Over the years, I've been called "Lisa Lisa" by quite a few people. So, when it came time for me to start my blog, I knew exactly what I would name it.  I really don't know what a "Quilt Jam" is, but as I started writing my one-year blogiversary post (tomorrow!!!), I decided to take a look at "quilt jam" definitions.

According to Urban Dictionary, here are the definitions for "Jam"
1)  2 or more musicians making music together but not an official band (could be 2 or more quilters, right?)
2)  To relax, or chill out (definitely describes quilting....most of the time, anyway)
3)  A fruity preserve that usually goes on toast or in sandwiches (hmmmmm.....not in my quilting room!)
4)  To get together with people to play music (.....or to quilt)
5)  Slang term for money, started in urban cities in the midwest (ummmmm....maybe I should start a business?)
6)  A positive multifunctiontional expression for wanting to be "all over" a person, place, or thing .b. This word is also used singuarly as an exclamation of goodness or excitment. c. A serisouly groovy tune i.e. Bennie and the Jets. Originally derived from the Rasta term "Jammin" as applied to music and musical performances made popluar by Bob Marley. (Whoa! Lots of misspellings in this entry! Yes, I am "all over" quilting! Quilt goodness/excitement? Yes! Seriously groovy quilting? Yes!  Jammin'? Yes!)
7)  A party, hopefully with lots of free beer (Yes! I've been known to have a party in my quilting room....with beer...coffee....wine....and it's free! Come on over!)

So there ya have it.  My Quilt Jam is all of those things rolled into one --- singing, drinking, relaxing, jammin', chillin', groovy quilting, etc. Good times!

Stay tuned for my giveaway - Just one more day!

Riley Blake Mystery Block of the Month -- Done!

I need another project like a need a hole in my head. I'm knee deep in half-square triangles working on a quilt that needs to be done soon! I had already signed up for the Sugar Block Club, but my fat quarter bundle for that isn't here yet, so I figured I had plenty of time to finish my HST quilt before the bundle arrived.

But then Kelli and I were emailing back and forth and back and forth and back and forth the other night, and she kinda talked me into doing the Riley Blake Mystery Block of the Month. OK...she didn't really talk me into it, but it didn't take much to reel me into another block of the month. Since it's a Riley Blake project, I didn't want to make it with non-Riley-Blake fabric. What to do, what to do?  I started checking my stash to see if I had any Riley Blake left on my little bolts. I didn't find any there, BUT I did find a stack that had been on my shelf for almost a year! A stack of Sweet Divinity by The Quilted Fish. It's beautiful, and I have 4 different fabrics! This line is no longer available, but hopefully I can find some.  Or I could just do a quilt with 4 prints.
I just added a little Bella white and made this beautiful little chevron block!

Looking forward to February's block!
Stay tuned for my 1-year blogiversary giveaway.....Just 2 more days!

Time Warp

What is it about craft & fabric stores that makes time fly like crazy? My husband says he remembers when he was young and his mother would drag him along to fabric shops, and it was like a time warp. I totally agree! I went to the quilt shop today to shop for some backing fabric and a little something for my upcoming giveaway to celebrate my one-year blogiversary (January 21st!). I can't remember what time I arrived at the store, but it was almost dark when I left. I felt like I had been there for hours. I don't think I was, but I'm not really sure. Weird. Anyway, I found some pretty awesome fabric,  including another Jessica Levitt Timber fabric to add to my stash. I really should make my quilt one of these days. Yes, that quilt is going to be for ME!! At this point, I think I've bought enough of the line to make two....maybe three quilts! Seriously.

So.....it's time to start preparations for Relay For Life. I've made a quilt to donate for the last two years. The first year, it was in the silent auction. But last year, I decided to sell raffle tickets instead, and that brought in quite a bit more money than the silent auction, so that's what I'll be doing again this year. Recently, Julie Hermann @ Jaybird Quilts posted about a cancer quilt.  As soon as I read about the What Cancer Cannot Do quilt fabric panel, I knew that's what I wanted to use for my RFL quilt. I bought four panels, two in white and two in natural. I'll make one quilt for the relay this year, and maybe save two for later, but one will definitely be reserved for a quilt for me and my husband.  Check out this panel -- Is this awesome, or what?

Don't forget to check back on the 21st for my giveaway! Of course, you're more than welcome to come back and visit before then :)

It started to look a lot like Christmas....

I had such good intentions. I wanted so badly to make my house look cozy and warm for Christmas, to make it look like a quilter lives here. I started on a Christmas quilt back in November but then decided I wanted to make something I could finish quickly (Yes, Alana, I remember you asking me if I thought I could actually finish it before Christmas and I said yes like it was no big deal). I was even home alone for four days while my husband was on a business trip recently. I thought it would be the perfect time to start some projects, and maybe finish them before he returned.  Ha ha ha! Yep, I was stuck here in the cold, rainy Pacific Northwest while he was heading to sunny San Diego. Well, the weather wasn't particularly sunny-Southern-California warm, and a teeny tiny part of me was happy about that. I know that sounds mean. I have this teeny tiny mean streak that comes out occasionally....I can't help it....it's hereditary.  Some call it sassy. Some call it attitude.

Anyway, I absolutely H-A-T-E when my husband is out of town, but it does make me appreciate all the things he does when he's here (dog duty, trash, etc.). While he was gone this time, the only thing I was able to put together was this cute little table runner using a City Girl Holiday charm pack. I love it!!!

I had a few leftover squares so will probably make a wall hanging...or a pillow...or a smaller table topper.

My goal this year is to make several holiday quilty items so that my house is ready for Christmas 2013. Maybe I'll even get a few other holiday items done - 4th of July? Halloween? Thanksgiving? Not sure how since I still need to fit in a 40-hour work week and workouts at the gym three days a week!!

A few things that I have planned  for this year--
*Snowball Fight Pillow that Amy at Stitchery Dickory Dock just posted recently.  Super easy and super cute! Oh, and I also joined her Sugar Block Club so will be making a quilt for myself this year!!
*Christmas Tree wall hanging that should be pretty easy.
*Two wall hangings that I purchased at a quilt show and my local quilt shop.
*My Christmas quilt that I started in November.

Well, it's Saturday morning and I need to head upstairs and get started on some quilting!
